Description
View of Florence from a nearby hillside by English watercolor painter Hercules Brabazon Brabazon (1821 - 1906), dating from c.1880. The son of Hercules Sharpe and his wife Anne Mary, daughter of Sir Anthony Brabazon, Hercules Brabazon was born and raised in Paris, and on the death of his elder brother, inherited a substantial estate in Ireland on condition he changed his name to Brabazon, hence the curious 'Brabazon Brabazon' moniker. The inheritance ensured he was independently wealthy and able to pursue his passion for painting and travel at will. He only began exhibiting and selling his paintings in his seventies, encouraged by his close friend, the artist John Singer Sargent. Over-selling of his work after his death devalued his paintings, but in the 1980s art dealership Chris Beetles Ltd led a revival, and many major museums now have examples of his work.
