Description
Stunning 1897 oil on canvas painting by Belgian symbolist Fernand Khnopff (1858-1944) of a languid-looking Acrasia, the 'faerie queen' from Elizabethan poet Edmund Spenser's epic masterwork of the same name. Acrasia was a red-head with a bad reputation, not least for her habit of transforming her lovers into monstrous animal shapes.
