Description
The Texas Federation of Women's Clubs mansion in Austin, Texas. Completed in 1931, it is sometimes called the "Driscoll House," in honor of member Clara Driscoll, even though she never lived there. A local author and philanthropist, Driscoll prevented the mansion's sale in 1939 by paying off its $92,000 debt. She is credited with saving the Alamo, in San Antonio, from conversion into a hotel in 1903 by purchasing the building and giving it to the State of Texas to rehabilitate and preserve.
Designed by prominent Dallas architect Henry Coke Knight (18961966), it is one of the best examples of Georgian revival architecture in Texas. As of 2014, the building is used primarily as a wedding and swing-dance venue.
